  • Description

A considerable boost for the economy of the Irish Republic is expected from the new Verolme Cork Dockyard, officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Sean Lemass at Rushbrooke, County Cork, October 15.

When the Bishop of Cork had blessed the yard, Mr. Lemass pressed a button and the first 38-ton keel section was moved by crane from the plating shop to blocks on the 688-foot slipway.

Among the guests of honour was Mr. Cornelis Verolme, the Dutch shipbuilding magnate who embarked on this new Irish venture over eighteen months ago, when he first visited Rushbrooke to weigh up its possibilities.

Asked about the future of the Cork Dockyard Company, Mr. Verolme said he was confident. He planned to build further extensions to the yard and its facilities. About the Cork workers who have been training in Dutch Verolme dockyards and workshops he said he had received favourable reports on their standard of efficiency.
