    YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) KENYA CELEBRATED ITS NEW ANNUAL HOLIDAY, KENYATTA DAY. IT MARKS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARREST OF MR. KENYATTA, THE PRIME MINISTER, AND THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE MAU MAU EMERGENCY IN 1952.

    IN NAIROBI, MR. KENYATTA TOOK THE SALUTE AT A MARCH-PAST OF ARMY AND AIR FORCE CONTINGENTS NEWLY EQUIPPED BY BRITAIN. HE ANNOUNCED THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF 82 PEOPLE IMPRISONED FOR TAKING ILLEGAL SECRET SOCIETY OATHS.

    A BLOOD DONOR CENTRE WAS OPENED TO MARK THE DAY. THE PUBLIC WERE ASKED TO GIVE THEIR BLOOD AS A SYMBOL OF THE BLOOD GIVEN BY AFRICANS DURING THE MAU MAU UPRISING. MEMBERS OF THE CABINET, INCLUDING TOM MBOYA WERE AMONG THOSE WHO DONATE THEIR BLOOD.

    OLD MAU MAU COLLEAGUES FLANKED MR. KENYATTA AT THE PARADE.

    THEY SAW NEW BRITISH-SUPPLIED ARMOURED TROOP CARRIERS - CARRYING TROOPS ARMED WITH NEW RIFLES, LIGHT MACHINE-GUNS AND MORTARS - FERRET SCOUT CARS AND LAND-ROVERS TOWING NEWLY SUPPLIED FIELD ARTILLERY.

    THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, MR. MALCOLM MACDONALD, IN A MESSAGE DESCRIBED THE PRIME MINISTER AS "AS SUPREME STATESMAN ENDOWED WITH INDOMITABLE COURAGE AND COMPASSIONATE HUMANITY".

    THE PARADE INCLUDED MEMBERS OF THE PARA-MILITARY POLICE GENERAL SERVICE UNITS AND MEMBERS OF THE PRISON SERVICE AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS, INCLUDING THE AMERICAN-EQUIPPED NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE, WHOSE MEMBERS MARCHED PAST WITH SPADES AT SLOPE.

    MR. KENYATTA DROVE TO THE ROSTRUM IN A CAVALCADE OF 50 CARS THROUGH STREETS LINED WITH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. HE LATER ADDRESSED A PUBLIC RALLY.

    EARLIER IN A BROADCAST, MR. KENYATTA APPEALED TO KENYANS TO ERASE FROM THEIR MINDS "ALL THE HATREDS AND DIFFICULTIES O THOSE YEARS WHICH NOW BELONG TO HISTORY" HE EXPLAINED THAT IN SPITE OF THE GOVERNMENT'S AFRICANISATION POLICY KENYA WOULD CONTINUE TO NEED MORE AND MORE EXPATRIATE EXPERTS.
