    Background: PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO OF CAMEROUN RECENTLY OPENED AN EXHIBITION OF AFRICAN BOOKS AT THE HEADQUARTERS IN YAOUNDE, CAMEROUN, OF THE AFRO-MALAGASY COMMON ORGANISATION (OCAM). THE EXHIBITION IS STILL ON, AND WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MAY 18.

    THE DISPLAY INCLUDES BOOKS FROM THE IVORY COAST, NIGERIA, MADAGASCAR, THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. IN ALL, SOME 26 COUNTRIES PARTICIPATED IN THE EXHIBITION.

    PRESIDENT AHIDJO PRONOUNCED THE EXHIBITION OPEN BEFORE AN AUDIENCE OF GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING WORLD.

    THE EXHIBITION WAS PRECEDED BY SEVERAL CONFERENCES ON THE BOOK PUBLISHING BUSINESS IN AFRICA -- ONE IN NAIROBI, AND OTHERS IN ACCRA AND DAKAR.

    OPENING THE EXHIBITION, PRESIDENT AHIDJO SAID: "OUR HOPE IS THAT THIS EXPOSITION, MODEST BUT AUTHENTIC, WILL BE A TRUE FESTIVAL OF AFRICAN LITERATURE." HE SAID IT WAS A CELEBRATION OF THE WRITTEN WORD.
