Background: PREPARATIONS ARE WELL AHEAD FOR THIS YEAR'S EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES, TO BE HELD AT KINGSTON, JAMAICA, IN AUGUST. WORK IS WELL ADVANCED ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF STADIUMS AND A FULL-SIZE OPEN-AIR POOL FOR THE SWIMMING EVENTS
THE GAMES, TO BE OPENED BY PRINCE PHILIP, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, WILL BE HELD BETWEEN 4 AND 13 AUGUST. NEARLY FORTY BRITISH EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES HAVE ENTERED.

RHODESIA WILL NOT BE TAKING PART. THE BREAKAWAY NATION'S EMPIRE AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES ASSOCIATION HAVE DECIDED NOT TO ENTER BECAUSE THEY FEEL THAT THEY MIGHT NOT BE WELCOME. THE EMPIRE GAMES FEDERATION HAVE STATED THAT SO LONG AS RHODESIA REMAINS IN THE COMMONWEALTH, RHODESIAN ATHLETES ARE ENTITLED TO COMPETE.

AMONG THE PROBLEMS FACING COMPETING COUNTRIES IS ONE OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY. THERE ARE FEARS THAT IN THE DISTANCE EVENTS, THERE IS A DANGER OF HEATSTROKE AND COLLAPSE. TEMPERATURES IN JAMAICA ARE LIKELY TO BE IN THE NINETIES FAHRENHEIT DURING THE GAMES WEEK, WITH A RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF 70 PER CENT.

MEANWHILE, WORK GOES AHEAD ON THE BUILDING OF THE STANDS AND STADIUMS WHICH WILL ACCOMMODATE THE SCORES OF COMPETING NATIONAL TEAMS AND THOUSANDS OF ATHLETICS ENTHUSIASTS.
