  • Description

GENERAL IVAN JAKUBOVSKI, THE SOVIET COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF IN EAST GERMANY, VISITED THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE AMERICAN ARMY IN EUROPE IN HEIDELBERG, AUG 8.

HE WAS GREETED BY GENERAL PAUL L. FREEMAN, THE AMERICAN COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, AND WATCHED A PARADE OF AMERICAN TROOPS IN HIS HONOUR. LATER A DINNER WAS GIVEN FOR HIM.

IT IS FOUR YEARS SINCE THE SOVIET COMMANDER IN GERMANY PAID A COURTESY VISIT OF THIS KIND TO AMERICAN HEADQUARTERS. GENEA GENERAL FREEMAN, SOON AFTER ASSUMING HIS COMMAND, PAID A VISIT TO THE SOVIET HEADQUARTERS AT KARLSHORST, JUST OUTSIDE EAST BERLIN, IN JUNE. HE INVITED GENERAL JAKUBOVSKI TO HEIDELBERG.

IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT THE RUSSIANS INTEND TO FOLLOW UP TODAY'S VISIT WITH COURTESY CALLS ON THE BRITISH AND FRENCH COMMANDERS-IN-CHIEF.

WATCHED BY A LARGE CROWD, INCLUDING GERMAN CIVILIANS, GENERAL JAKUBOVSKI SAID ON ARRIVAL: "THIS EXCHANGE OF COURTESY VISITS IS A MEANS OF CREATING CONTACTS AND MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING".

EARLIER AT THE CROSSING POINT ON THE BORDER, GENERAL JAKUBOVSKI AND HIS PARTY OF FOUR SENIOR OFFICERS WERE WELCOMED BY GENERAL JAMES POLK, COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN FOURTH ARMOURED DIVISION.

IN A COLUMN OF 13 MILITARY CARS, THE RUSSIANS AND THE AMERICANS DROVE 150 MILES ALONG THE AUTOBAHN TO HEIDELBERG.
