  • Description

Black American militant Angela Davis urged black Americans to unite in the struggle against imperialism, during her recent visit to Tanzania. She arrived in Dar-es-Salaam last Monday (20 August). Her week-long visit was at the invitation of the ruling Tanganyika African National Union party.

Miss Davis told reporters that Afro-Americans should struggle wherever they happened to be, rather than advocating a "Back to Africa" movement. She added," U.S. imperialism is our enemy at home, and we know that Portuguese colonialism is being supported by the U.S. government.

She declared that "to be successful, the blacks in America and our brothers in Africa have to rally behind one another in order to liberate all blacks around the world."
During her visit, Miss Davis addressed students at University College in Dar-es-Salaam. She announced there would be a conference of block Americans in California next month. The aims of the conference would be to unite all people of African origin in their struggle against imperialism and neo-colonialism.

Miss Davis said she would take the opportunity to thank all those who worked towards her release from prison, and that during her visit she would he able to learn about Tanzania's experience of socialism.

Miss Davis, once a Professor of Philosophy at the University of California at Los Angeles, was acquitted of charges of murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy that arose from an attempt to seize hostages from a Californian court to secure the release of "Soledad Brother" George Jackson.
