Background: High winds preventing the normal tidal flow, caused floods in Venice, October 15. Gondolas and boats normally confined to the canals are in use all over the city.

Shops and wholesale houses have suffered heavy damage, with most of their goods ruined or damaged. Many families are homeless while others have been able to move to the second floor of their homes. In St. Marks Square, planks have been constructed into a pavement above water level.

Most of the city traffic is at a standstill with car roofs showing above the water. The city of canals has turned into a lake.
