  • Description

An estimated fifteen thousand demonstrators marched through the streets of Bonn, West Germany, on Sunday (14 January) to protest against the United States bombing on North Vietnam. They marched form a rally in the grounds of the University of Bonn to the city's Town Hall where protesters were prevented from entering by police. Several demonstrators attempted to reach the front door of the building but were pushed back down the steps by police. Following this incident there were several scuffles as police moved into the demonstrators to seal off the stairway.

The protest was described by organisers as a march in solidarity with the "fighting people of Vietnam." Protesters said the recent massive bombing of Hanoi and Halphong were war crimes by the U.S.

SYNOPSIS: An estimated fifteen thousand demonstrators marched through the streets of Bonn in West Germany to protest against the United States bombing of North Vietnam.

Organisers described the march as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Vietnam. The protest was also aimed partially at the West German Government which was described as a puppet of the U.S.

After marching from the University of Bonn the demonstrators assembled outside the City Hall.

When several protesters tired to enter the City hall, helmeted police forced them back into the square facing the building. The protesters accused the U.S. of war crimes in Vietnam and condemned their own government for not speaking out against the U.S.

In an apparent effort to prevent more demonstrators climbing the stairs of the City Hall, police moved into the square and more clashes followed.
