  • Description

President Makarios of Cyprus yesterday (Friday) honoured the pilot who saved his life by landing his bullet-riddled helicopter following an attack by would-be assassins. The President bestowed the medal of Saint Barnabas Church of Cyprus on Zacharias Parpardoyannis, who was only recently released form hospital where he was recovering from wounds received in the attack.

The assassination attempt was made on March 8. A band of Greek Cypriots fired on the President's helicopter as it was taking off from the Archbishopic in Nicosia. Parpardoyannis, although badly wounded in the stomach, managed to land the helicopter safely. His heroism saved President Makarios from injury and possible death.

Yesterday Parpardoyannis went to the Archbishopic to receive the medal. A large number of schoolchildren crowded outside and cheered as the Greek pilot entered to meet the President and Government officials gathered for the ceremony.

After a speech praising the pilot for his action, President Makarios presented him with the medal....the highest award for heroism in Cyprus.
