  • Description

THE BEST ONE-YEAR-OLD THOROUGHBRED RACE-HORSES IN AMERICA WERE AUCTIONED THIS WEEK AT THIS ANNUAL YEARLING SALE IN KENTUCKY, BUT THERE WAS A SHADOW HANGING OVER THE EVENT. ON PEOPLE'S MINDS WAS THE DANGER THAT THE SLEEPING SICKNESS EPIDEMIC NOW AFFECTING TEXAS COULD SPREAD TO HORSES IN KENTUCKY.

IF THAT HAPPENS SOME YEARLINGS BOUGHT HERE COULD CATCH THE DISEASE AND DIE BEFORE THEY COULD RACE. BUT, THAT THREAT DID NOT SEEM TO HOLD DOWN THE BIDDING. PRICES REACHED RECORD LEVELS, AND ALTOGETHER 333 HORSES WERE SOLD FOR MORE THAN TEN MILLION DOLLARS.

THE ONLY NOTICEABLE SIGNS OF A THREAT WERE IN THE FACT THAT NO HORSES FROM TEXAS WERE SOLD, AND THERE WERE FEW BUYERS FROM OVERSEAS, SINCE SEVERAL FOREIGN COUNTRIES HAVE TEMPORARILY BANNED IMPORTING AMERICAN HORSES.

IF THE EPIDEMIC DID REACH THE PASTURES OF KENTUCKY IT WOULD DEVASTATE HORSE-RACING, AND HURT STATES WHICH COLLECT A LOT OF TAX MONEY FROM RACING. KENTUCKY'S HORSE-FARMS FACE THE DANGER FOR EIGHT OR TEN MORE WEEKS. THEN COOL WEATHER WILL KILL THE MOSQUITOES WHICH CARRY THE DISEASE, AND THE DANGER WILL BE OVER AT LEAST UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

SYNOPSIS: THE BEST ONE-YEAR-OLD THOROUGHBRED HORSES IN AMERICA WERE AUCTIONED AT THIS ANNUAL YEARLING SALE AT KEENELAND, KENTUCKY THIS WEEK, BUT A SHADOW HUNG OVER THE EVENT. ON PEOPLE'S MINDS WAS THE DANGER THAT THE SLEEPING SICKNESS EPIDEMIC NOW AFFECTING TEXAS BLOODSTOCK COULD SPREAD TO HORSES IN KENTUCKY. IF THAT HAPPENS, SOME YEARLINGS BOUGHT HERE COULD CATCH THE DISEASE AND DIE BEFORE THEY CAN RACE. BUT THE THREAT DID NOT SEEM TO HOLD DOWN THE BIDDING. PRICES WERE AT RECORD LEVELS.

A BIG INSECTICIDE SPRAYING CAMPAIGN HAS BEGUN, TRYING TO KILL THE MOSQUITOES AND OTHER INSECTS THAT SPREAD VENEZUELAN SLEEPING SICKNESS DISEASE. RANCHERS SPRAYED THEIR OWN PASTURES, WHILE AIRCRAFT SPRAYED A FOUR-HUNDRED-MILE CORRIDOR ALONG THE TEXAS GULF COAST.

THE SLEEPING SICKNESS DISEASE AMONG HORSES HAS GONE FROM THE MEXICAN BORDER DEEP INTO TEXAS, AND THERE ARE SUSPECTED CASES IN AT LEAST ONE NEIGHBOURING STATE, OKLAHOMA. TWELVE HUNDRED HORSES HAVE DIED IN TEXAS, ANOTHER 1500 ARE INFECTED. THE DISEASE HAS ALSO INFECTED SOME PEOPLE, BUT SO FAR NOT VERY BADLY. SEVENTEEN KNOWN CASES ARE IN HOSPITAL, ANOTHER SEVENTY ARE SUSPECTED. IN PEOPLE IT TAKES THE FORM OF A RATHER MILD FLU, AND SO FAR NO-ONE HAS DIED FROM IT.

OUTSIDE HOUSTON, IN A MOTEL, THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HAS SET UP AN EMERGENCY CENTRE, TO CO-ORDINATE EFFORTS TO STOP THE DISEASE. THEY REALLY DON'T KNOW HOW WELL THEY ARE SUCCEEDING, BUT THEY ARE OPTIMISTIC.
