  • Description

THE UNMANNED EIGHT-WHEELED SOVIET CRAFT THAT LANDED ON THE MOON THIS WEEK IS PEING OPERATED BY REMOTE CONTROL FROM RUSSIA.....AND IS SENDING BACK TO EARTH TELEVISION PICTURES OF ITS OWN TRACKS IN THE MOON DUST. MEANWHILE, AMERICA'S FIRST LUNAR VEHICLE, TO BE OPERATED BY MAN ON THE MOON'S SURFACE, WAS PUT ON DISPLAY THIS WEEK.

Development of an American vehicle to explore the moon's surface came closer with the delivery of a training model at the Marshall Space Elight Centre in california. It will very shortly be shipped to Houston for use by the astronauts.

The model shown in these films supplied by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is similar to the one that will be built for operation on the moon.

But there are key differences. The earth model is nearly twice as heavy as the actual LRV-Lunar Roving Vehicle. The extra weight is caused by heavies parts to operate in the earth's gravitational system. Gravity on the moon is one-sixth that on earth. The same restrictions require automobile type tires on the training model. The LRV will have special wire mesh wheels. The 11-foot vehicle can achieve a top speed of nine miles an hour......and is powered by nickel cadmium batteries.

The first use of the LRV on the moon is planned for the Apollo 15, next year.
