Background: INTRODUCTION: A high ranking Chinese military delegation has arrived in Pakistan on what is being described as a goodwill mission.Top Pakistani military figures greeted them at Islamabad airport.
SYNOPSIS: It was the first visit to Pakistan by a Chief of Staff of the Chinese Peoples' Liberation Army.
Pakistan's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mohammed Iqbal Khan, had invited his Chinese counterpart, the veteran General Yang Dezhi, on a friendship visit. The Chinese general is a veteran of the Long March of 1933 and the Korean War.He is now 71-years-old with nearly 50-years of distinguished military service. As well as being China's Chief of Staff with responsibility for all the armed forces, he is also the Vice Minister for National Defence.
Pakistan and China are untied in their opposition to the Soviet Union's intervention in neighbouring Afghanistan. The Pakistanis provide a base for hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees and opponents of the Soviet-backed regime.Pakistan has been keen to increase its defence capability in the light of regional tension and won 3,000 dollars worth of military equipment from the U.S.earlier this year. The ten-man Chinese delegation will be in Pakistan for five days. The discussions seemed to have begun in earnest even before the dignitaries went to their waiting cars.
