  • Description

At MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, the CH3C, latest Air Force helicopter, is being evaluated by the Air Force's Air Rescue Service for use in emergency crash fire suppression.

As the fire fighters move in on the upwind of a simulated plane crash, the helicopter lifts and hovers behind them. The rotor downwash cools the men and rolls the flames away from the mock aircraft. A path of foam is laid to the cockpit area so that trapped personnel can be quickly rescued.

Air Rescue Service has used helicopter fire suppression word-wide (with a variety of helicopters) since 1961, saving 224 lives.

The CH3C downwash is more powerful and covers a greater area than any helicopter in the current Air Force inventory.
