  • Description

In the wake of Arab disquiet over the result of the Israeli general election, which swept aside the 29-year-old Labour government and put into power the right-wing Likud Party, the Prime Minister Designate, Menachem begin, has been visiting one of the controversial jewish settlements on the West Bank of the Jordan. Under the previous government, these settlements -- on land occupied in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war -- were declared 'unauthorised'.

SYNOPSIS: The Kaddum settlement, founded by a group which calls itself the Alon Moreh, is one of them. A Likud founder member, General Ariel Sharon, was one of the official party touring the area on Thursday (May 19).

Mr. Begin led the Likud Party to victory in the first elections to break Labour domination since the state of Israel was founded in 1948. While he says he's ready to personally lead an Israeli mission into peace negotiations with the Arab states, he's also promising to increase jewish settlements on the West Bank -- one of the major causes of dissent between the two sides.

Illustrating the promise, he led Thursday's inspection tour. UP SOUND FOR FOUR SECONDS AND DOWN. The international initiatives to resume the 1973 Geneva peace conference on the Middle East, hopefully sometime this year, has been based on the possible creation of an independent Palestinian state on the West Bank. Until the Israeli general election both Israel and the Arab states and their international sponsors seemed agreed to talk on this basis. But now, Mr. Begin says the West Bank is 'liberated jewish territory'.
