  • Description

Local hero Cuillermo Vilas won the men's singles title in the Argentine tennis championship in Buenos Aires on Sunday (24 November) and became one of the top six money-earners in world tennis.

Vilas, who beat Manuel Orantes of Spain by three sets to one, has earned over 200,000 dollars on the tennis circuit this year. Only five other players have ever matched these earnings in one year.

On Sunday, the long-haired Vilas played erratic but often brilliant tennis against the slower Orantes and ran out winner 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Both players delighted the 7,500 crowd at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis club with energetic rallies, brilliant recoveries and finely-angled passing shots.

After taking the first set 6-3, Vilas lost his concentration and Drantes punished him mercilessly by taking the second 6-0.

Vilas recovered, however, and narrowly won the third and longest set 7-5. The outcome was still in doubt in the fourth set, which had four breaks of service, until Vilas piled on the pressure and clinched it 6-2.

Vilas, aged 22, collected 9,000 dollars for his victory and assured himself of the lead in the Commercial Union Tennis Grand Prix and will now head the top eight contestants in the series in Australia next month when they play the Masters Tournament.
