STUDENTS HAVE BEGUN EVACUATING THE SORBONNE UNIVERSITY IN PARIS -- THE MOVEMENT BEGAN AS POLICE OUTSIDE HURLED TEARGAS GRENADES AND FIRECRACKERS TO DISPERSE THOUSANDS MASSING IN PROTEST OF POLICE ACTION IN CORDONING OFF THE UNIVERSITY BUILDING.

THE GROWING CROWD OF STUDENTS WAS PRESSING IN ON THE POLICE CORDONS WHEN THE VIOLENCE BROKE OUT. MANY CURIOUS ONLOOKERS WERE INCLUDED IN THE STUDENT GROUP, AND AS THE POLICE MOVED IN WITH THEIR GRENADES AND BEATING ANYONE THEY CAUGHT, THE CROWD FLED.

WITHIN MINUTES THE BOULEVARD ST. MICHEL BY THE SORBONNE WAS EMPTY. ONCE THE CROWD HAD MOVED OFF, THE POLICE RESUMED THEIR POSITIONS. THE STUDENTS, WHO HAD OCCUPIED THE SORBONNE FOR A MONTH, BEGAN TO LEAVE THE BUILDING AT THE SAME TIME.

THE MOVE OUT CAME AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF TALKS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND POLICE OFFICIALS INCLUDING THE PARIS POLICE CHIEF, MAURICE GRIMAUD. PRIME MINISTER GEORGES POMPIDOU TOLD NEWSMEN TODAY THAT IN A FEW DAYS THE SORBONNE WILL BE RE-OPENED TO STUDENTS AND TEACHERS.
