  • Description

President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia and President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania came to the Tanzanian border town of Tunduma on Monday (August 27), to mark the historic crossing of the Tanzam Railway into Zambia.

The railway which will run for 1,100 miles (1,800 kms), from Tanzania's seaport capital of Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi near Zambia's copperbelt, was approaching its halfway mark. An army of 50,000 people, including 15,000 Chinese workers, engineers and technicians laid 600 miles (970 kms) of track to reach the Zambian border, including the toughest stretch through Tanzania's Southern Highlands, where 21 tunnels had to be bored.

Just before the first stretch of track in Zambia was laid, President Kaunda told a crowd of 15,000, "the Tanzam Railway" is a freedom railway, a railway of the people by the people for the people."
The new railway, reported to be two years ahead of schedule, is crucial to the economy of landlocked Zambia.

With Zambia's traditional routes to the sea across Rhodesia now closed, Zambian exports and imports have had to be carried to such ports as Dar es Salaam by lorry.

President Kaunda said the line through Rhodesia had been the work of "that arch enemy of Africa, Cecil Rhodes."
The Zambian President said he personally would drive the first train from Kapire Mposhi to Dar es Salaam.

The cost of the railway, about GBP 180 million sterling (468 million US dollars) is being met by an interest free loan from The People's Republic of China.

President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire had been expected at Monday's ceremonies but instead sent a representative, Mr. Kithima Bin Ramazani, State Commissioner of the Interior.

SYNOPSIS: At the Tanzanian border town of Tunduma on Monday, President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia and President Julius Nyerere arrived to mark the crossing of the Tanzam Railway into Zambia. It was three years since fifty thousand workers started work on the project. A crowd of fifteen thousand came to see the first historic stretch of track laid on Zambian soil.

President Kaunda waved a white handkerchief as he came to the ceremony with President Nyerere, in a light suit. President Mobutu of Zaire had also been expected but instead sent a representative, Mr. Kithima Bin Ramazani, State Commissioner of the Interior, who brought a message from President Mobutu.

With traditional dances, they celebrated the approach of the half-way stage of the railway, which is crucial to the economy of landlocked Zambia.

Mr. Bin Ramazani of Zaire was given the honour of cutting the official ribbon. Behind lay six hundred miles of track from Dar es Salaam. It included the toughest stretch of all -- through Tanzania's Southern Highland's, where twenty one tunnels had to be bored.

The railway is being financed by an interest-free loan from The People's Republic of China of GBP 180 million sterling.

In his speech, President Kaunda said it was a freedom railway - by the people, for the people.

Some of the Chinese engineers and technicians building the railway watched as the fist Zambian track was laid. Ahead, another seven hundred miles of railway to link up Kapiri Mposhi, near Zambia's copper belt, with the port of Dar es Salaam.

Since Zambia's rail route through Rhodesia has been closed, the vital copper exports had to be carried overland to the sea by lorry.

The Tanzam Railway is now due for completion next year -- four years after construction began. At Monday's ceremony, President Kaunda said he personally would drive the first train from Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam.
