  • Description

ARRIVING AT NAIROBI AIRPORT, ON SATURDAY, (OCTOBER 19TH), DR. BANDA, PRIME MINISTER OF NYASALAND WAS AT THE LAST STAGE OF HIS INTERNATIONAL TOUR WHICH TOOK HIM TO THE UNITED STATES, BRITAIN AND ITALY. (HE ARRIVED BACK IN BLANTYRE, NYASALAND ON SUNDAY).

DURING HIS ONE DAY VISIT TO LONDON HE HAD TALKS ABOUT NYASALAND'S FORTHCOMING INDEPENDENCE ON JULY 6TH, 1964. PREVIOUSLY IN THE UNITED STATES, HE HAD MET PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND INVITED HIM TO VISIT AFRICA. (THE PRESIDENT LOOKED FORWARD TO THE OPPORTUNITY BUT SAID IT WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND TIME). WHILE IN ROME, DR. BANDA HAD TALKS WITH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND LEADING INDUSTRIALISTS.

(ON ARRIVAL BACK IN BLANTYRE, THE NYASALAND PRIME MINISTER, WARNED THE 20,000 CROWD THAT GATHERED TO MEET HIM THAT INDEPENDENCE WAS NOT THE END OF THEIR TROUBLES. NOW WAS THE TIME FOR HARD WORK TO MAKE NYASALAND - OR MALAWI, AS IT WILL BE CALLED - PROSPEROUS. HE REPEATED PREVIOUS WARNINGS THAT EUROPEANS WERE WELCOME, PROVIDED THEY WERE PREPARED TO ACCEPT AFRICAN RULE.)
