  • Description

THE FIRST AFRICAN TO BE CONSECRATED AS AN ANGLICAN BISHOP IN CENTRAL AFRICA WAS INSTALLED IN HIS OFFICE AT A CEREMONY IN LUSAKA ON SUNDAY, (SEPTEMBER 20TH). HE IS BISHOP SUFFRAGAN IN THE DIOCESE OF NORTHERN RHODESIA, THE RIGHT REVEREND FILEMON MATAKA, A FORMER HEREDITARY CHIEF OF THE BASENGA TRIBE.

THE SERVICE, ATTENDED BY EUROPEAN AS WELL AS AFRICAN LEADERS, WAS HELD IN THE CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY CROSS IN LUSAKA, WITH ALL THE BISHOPS OF CENTRAL AFRICA IN ATTENDANCE.

FILEMON MATAKA WAS BORN IN THE EASTERN PROVINCE OF NORTHERN RHODESIA WHERE HE RECEIVED HIS EARLY EDUCATION AT A MISSION SCHOOL. HIS THEOLOGICAL TRAINING WAS UNDERTAKEN IN NORTHERN RHODESIA, AND HE WAS ORDAINED A PRIEST IN 1943.

BISHOP MATAKA AT FIRST WORKED AMONG HIS OWN PEOPLE IN THE EASTERN PROVINCE, AND SEVERAL YEARS AGO WAS APPOINTED CHIEF PRIEST OF THE CHURCH OF THE AFRICAN MARTYRS AT NDOLA, IN THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN COPPER BELT.

HIS EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND ARE EXPECTED TO BE OF VITAL IMPORTANCE WHEN NORTHERN RHODESIA ACHIEVES INDEPENDENCE NEXT MONTH. IT'S EXPECTED THAT BISHOP MATAKA WILL PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE ADMINISTRATION AND, PERHAPS, THE REORGANISATION OF THE DIOCESE WHEN NORTHERN RHODESIA BECOMES THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA.
