The 9,500 exhibiting firms come from 67 countries. European firms predominate although this year there was a strong participation from Japanese companies. The spring fair concentrates on machine tools, electronics and data processing equipment.
SYNOPSIS: The Leipzig Spring Fair opened its gates today to thousand of firms from East and West....as it has been doing for centuries. In the past the autumn fair used to be the second in importance...but now a balance has been reached with the Spring fair concentrating on machine tools, electronic and data processing equipment while the autumn fair is predominantly devoted to consumer goods.
More than nine and a half thousand firms from 67 countries are exhibiting at the Spring Fair this year. European concerns predominate, although this year the Japanese companies have doubled their stands. The Soviet Union is also well represented and model of the TU-144 drew wide attention. Herr Willi Stoph, the East German leader was among the first day guests.
Among the developing countries to take part this year is Chile, which recently elected a Marxist Government. It has doubled its exhibition area. But West Germany has the largest quota with 860 exhibitors.
