Background: An American Bishop, Monsignor james Edward Walsh--the Roman Catholic Missionary released last month by the People's Republic of China after being imprisoned for twelve years on spying charges--arrived in Rome today after flying from Hong Kong.

At the airport to meet Bishop Walsh ware Monsignor Gionvanni Benelli, deputy for the Vatican, Secretary of State, and Armenian Cardinal Gregory Peter Agagianian, Perfect of the Vatican Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith.

Frail and in ill health after his long prison ordeal, Bishop Walsh was lifted from the aircraft in wheel chair. He had been accompanied on the flight from Hong Kong by a physician. Sister Patricia Fitzmaurice.

Bishop Walsh told Monsignor Benelli and Cardinal Agagianian that he still had great affection for the Chinese people despite his imprisonment. Also at the airport to greet him was Father Francois Legrand, who used to work at Catholic Centre Bureau with Bishop Walsh and who was himself imprisoned for two years by the Chinese in Shanghai.

Bishop Walsh was driven from the airport to the Salvator Mundi hospital to rest before meeting his two sisters, mary Walsh and Julia Werner, both in their 80's, who flew from the United States to see him.

Tomorrow, if his health permits, Bishop Walsh will be received by Pope Paul at Castelgandolfo, the Pontiff's Summer residence in the Alban Hills near Rome.
