    NINETEEN BELGIAN REFUGEES, RESCUED FROM REBELS IN NORTHERN BUTA LAST SATURDAY, WERE FLOWN TO BRUSSELS AIRPORT FROM LEOPOLDVILLE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). THEY INCLUDED 15 BELGIAN NUNS, A BRITISH MISSIONARY NURSE AND A BELGIAN MOTHER AND HER TWO DAUGHTERS.

    THE NUNS, DRESSED IN WHITE HABITS, WERE IN GOOD SPIRITS AS THEY CAME DOWN THE AIRCRAFT STEPS. THEY WAVE TO RELATIVES AND CHURCH OFFICIALS WHO WERE EXCITEDLY WAITING FOR THEIR ARRIVAL. THERE WERE MANY TEARFUL SCENES OF REUNION.

    MILITARY OFFICIALS HAD GIVEN UP ALL HOPE OF RESCUING THE 19 EUROPEANS AFTER COLONEL HOARE'S MEN REPORTED FINDING 31 PRIESTS DEAD AND OTHER EUROPEANS, INCLUDING CHILDREN, SPEARED AND LEFT TO DIE IN BUTA. A GOVERNMENT PATROL FOLLOWED UP THE REBELS WHEN THEY EVACUATED THE TOWN AND SAVED HE REFUGEES' LIVES, BECAUSE IN THE WORDS OF THE MISSIONARY NURSE: "THE REBELS WERE CONSTANTLY THREATENING US BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE WHEN THE MERCENARIES ARRIVED AND THEY FLED QUICKLY LEAVING US BEHIND."
