  • Description

At the Rhein-Main air base at Frankfurt/Main, West Germany, a fleet of United States C-124 "Globemaster" transport aircraft are stationed for routine flights within the framework of NATO.

One of the mainstays of the 1948/49 airlift operations during the Russian block of West Berlin, these aircraft are ready once again to play a similar role if the need arises.

Restrictions recently imposed on traffic to and from Berlin - and now also between the eastern and western halves of Berlin - by the East German authorities have many precedents in the past ten years, and there is no immediate reason to suspect that the present tightening of the stranglehold on the city will go beyond the limits of temporary intimidation. However, should the situation deteriorate further, means are at hand to counter the threat of complete isolation and starvation.
