Background: HUNDREDS OF DEMONSTRATORS -- 80TH GREEK AND TURKISH -- GATHERED AT LONDON AIRPORT TODAY (SUNDAY) AS MORE DELEGATES ARRIVED FOR THE CYPRUS CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE, OPENING NEXT WEDNESDAY. THE TALKS, WHICH FOLLOW VIOLENT CLASHES BETWEEN THE ISLAND REPUBLIC'S GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES, WILL BE ATTENDED BY BRITISH, GREEK, AND TURKISH MINISTERS AND REPRESENTATIVES TO THE TWO CYPRIOT COMMUNITIES.

"ONE UNIFIED CYPRUS" -- THE SLOGAN ON MANY BANNERS -- INDICATED THE STAND TO BE TAKEN BY THE GREEK CYPRIOTS: THE FIRST OF WHOM ARRIVING WERE MR. KYPRIANOU, FOREIGN MINISTER, AND MR. CLERIDES, PARLIAMENTARY LEADER. THE FOREIGN MINISTER TOLD REPORTERS HE WAS NOT OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF THE CONFERENCE. BOTH HE AND MR. CLERIDES SAID THAT TURKISH PLANS FOR PARTITIONING CYPRUS WERE ENTIRELY OUT OF THE QUESTION.

REPRESENTING THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS WILL BE MR RAUF DENKTASH. HE SAID THAT ALTHOUGH HE'D COME WITH AN OPEN MIND, HE WOULD DEMAND A SETTLEMENT WHICH COULD NOT LEAVE HIS COMMUNITY "AT THE MERCY OF THE GREEKS AS THE LAST SETTLEMENT HAD DONE." HE WANTED HIS PEOPLE HAPPY -- NOT RIDDLED WITH BULLETS.

THE GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. PALAMAS -- LIKE THE TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER WHO ARRIVED A DAY EARLIER -- WAS WELCOMED TO LONDON BY LORD CARRINGTON, MINISTER OF STATE AT THE BRITISH FOREIGN OFFICE. MR. PALAMAS SAID HE WAS SURE THE TWO COMMUNITIES IN CYPRUS, WHICH HAD LIVED TOGETHER PEACEFULLY FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS, COULD LIVE THE SAME WAY IN THE FUTURE.
