  • Description

CHEN CHUNG (CQ), VICE PRESIDENT OF NATIONALIST CHINA SAID THIS MORNING THAT THE COMMUNISTS HAVE MADE A BID TO HOLD OPEN PEACE TALKS. THE NATIONALIST SAY...

....THEY HAVE REJECTED THE PEACE FEELERS.

THE U.S. SEVENTH FLEET CONTINUES TO PATROL IN THE FORMOSAN STRAITS, BUT A SPOKESMAN SAID YESTERDAY THAT THE QUEMOY CRISIS HAS DEFINITELY RELAXED. MANY OF THE FLEET'S UNITS ARE BEING MOVED TO OTHER POINTS. BUT BEFORE THE DISPERSAL BEGAN, GENERALISSIMO CHIANG KAI SHEK WAS FLOWN BY HELICOPTER TO THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER MIDWAY FOR A FINAL DEMONSTRATION OF AMERICAN NAVAL MIGHT. CHIANG WAS ACCOMPANIED BY ADMIRAL HERBERT C. HOPWOOD (CQ), COMMANDER TO THE U.S. PACIFIC FLEET.

IT HAS BEEN LARGELY THE THREAT OF THE AMERICAN SEVENTH FLEET, WHICH HAS DETERRED THE CHINESE COMMUNISTS FROM DOING ANYTHING MORE THAN STAGE NUISANCE BOMBARDMENTS ON THE OFF-SHORE ISLANDS.
