Background: Ghanaians are getting an opportunity to learn more about oriental arts and crafts with the opening of a three-day Japanese Cultural Festival in Accra earlier this week.

Judo has played an important part in strengthening cultural ties between the two countries. Three times in the past few years the Japanese Government has sent judo experts as instructors to the Ghanaians -- and jude demonstration also played an important part at this week's Cultural Festival.

But the exhibition was designed to give a wider perspective of traditional Japanese arts and crafts. And at the opposite extreme from judo, there were regular displays of Japanese floral arrangement. Ghana's Commissioner for Education, Culture and Sport, Col. P.K. Nkege officially opened the festival on Monday (May 22).
