I had not the chance to query this story before shooting as I came across it while spending the weekend on this particular farm, although I had shot the story previously on 35mm for the COI and shipped it through the British Information Services here in Nairobi.
I had not the chance to query this story before shooting as I came across it while spending the weekend on this particular farm, although I had shot the story previously on 35mm for the COI and shipped it through the British Information Services here in Nairobi. If no use can be found for it then I would be grateful if you would ship it back to me debiting the cost of stock etc to my account, but with the interesting aspects presented I would think that it would fit into one of the BBC programmes - anyway have a look and see.
Mr. Michael Low how was born in Kenya has over the past years been farming on a farm of 1095 acres, and only some 600 of those acres are were under production. He intended staying in the country and not selling out to the government when the majority of the european farmers in the country could not get rid of their farms quick enough. His idea was ask his former labour on the farm if they were prepared to come into partnership with him if he provided them with farms of approximately 50acres. they were keen on the idea and the government was approached by Low and his scheme was presented to them for their consideration and subsequent purchase of the acreage that he could not farm himself. Over 400acres were bought by the government and granted to Low's former labourers to be repayed over a period of 30 years. The co-operative was formed by Low and the certificate of co-operative was presented to him and his farmers by the government. Low assisted the new farmers in,planning and bush clearing, and hire them his equipment such as ploughs and tractors etc. for the development of their land. The sound interview will give the whole idea of what he is aiming at, and this was carried out by Don Scott-Reid of the Information staff at Aden, he is on holiday in this part of the world now. But if the film is used he would prefer that his name is not mentioned for obvious reasons. During the last scene in which three old settler types are talked to one of them refers to the time that he arrived in the country and said that the inhabitants of the Kitale area where cannibals Low heard this and would prefer that this was not used as if may create a rather bad feeling with the government at the moment, and to my knowledge it is not in fact the truth.
