  • Description

The Bulgarian Vice-President, Mr. Poke Takev, arrived in Dar es Sales the capital of Tanzania, on Tuesday (14 August) to begin a five-day State visit. Mr. Takev was welcomed by Prime Minister Rashidi Kawawa, other Cabinet minister and members of the diplomatic corps. Thousands of flag-waving Tanzanians lined the official motorcade route from the airport to the State House.

Mr. Takev had private talks with President Julius Nyerere on Tuesday night, before attending a State dinner in his honour. At the dinner, Prime Minister Kawada said Tanzanian officials had taken the opportunity, during the visit, to discuss new areas of co-operation between the two countries.

This coverage centres on a news conference on Saturday, when Mr. Takev said his country felt an obligation to assist people fighting for independence, freedom and social justice in the white-ruled areas of Southern Africa. He added that Bulgaria had for some time given aid to "liberation movements." Mr. Takev said he was able to meet representatives of some of these movements during his visit to Tanzania. He also announced that a new Bulgaria-Tanzania agricultural co-operation agreement had been signed; so had the contract for a new GBP 1 million (2.5 million U.S. dollars) hides and skins factory.
