Background: In India, heavy rain has left sixty five square miles of West Bengal under water, destroying crops and leaving thousands of people homeless. The Indian government has been ferrying emergency food supplies to the area as well as taking precautions against a possible.

SYNOPSIS: The monsoon rains added to problem caused earlier this year when bad weather destroyed nearly ten per cent of the wheat crop.

Many roads were washed away by the floods, and a number of buildings were almost completely submerged.

It's been estimated that more then 500 houses were destroyed in one district alone. The authorities said altogether 200,000 people had been affected by the floods. Those living in mud huts had been left homeless, but it's not known whether anyone drowned in the disaster.

Most people had lengthy waits for rescue before boats arrived to ferry them to safety. They were being placed in temporary accommodation until the waters receded and they could return to assess the damage to property and crops. The government announced that wheat damaged earlier this year would be used for animal feed. Ironically the authorities had been faced with a shortage of storage space because of a record crop. The World Bank had been asked for help to create additional storage capacity.

In this area villagers managed to find both food and safety for their cattle -- which fared better than some of the houses.
