  • Description

The traditionally strong cultures of local Indians from the Amazon River Basin of Peru are being changed by the introduction of western civilization.

One particular group of Indians - the Yagua tribe - is more affected that most, a its age-old territory has come under the influence of oil exploration companies, liquor salesmen and package-deal tourist agencies.

There has been increased drunkenness among the natives and their life style has changed generally, especially among the members of one village which was uprooted and moved to a convenient location be a travel agency of Iquitos.

SYNOPSIS: A package deal tour which begins with a canoe ride up the Amazon River, through the jungles of Peru, and includes a visit to primitive native village, would seam attractive to most people used to modern cit life. But for the people who live in the villages, such tours can be very disruptive, as they interrupt the day-to-day life of the Indians who spin cotton and pursue other simple activities.

Appearances can be deceptive because these Indians - the Yagua tribe - who comprise four families from deep in the Amazon jungle, were imported by a travel agency. The agency - Amazon Lodge of Iquitos - moved the Indians and their animals to within one day's canoe rides of the town.

Modern products, such as the rifles, are now finding their way into the artificial village. Drinking has increased among the indians, whose traditional farming and hunting habits ware disturbed when they ware brought nearer the city. Indians of all ages now participate in drinking sprees, and suffer accordingly.

Traditional arts, such as pot-making, are being tailored for the tourist industry, while traditional foods, such as grubs and ants, are now mainly eaten for the benefit of tourists.

The tourist guide provides the highlight of the tour, by taking paper money and making it into target for the indians to shoot at with their blowpipes. This competition, like the other activities of the tour, was organised by the tourist agency, and reflects just how much the Indians have come to depend on modern civilization.
