  • Description

Egypt's President Anwar Sadat conferred with President Tito of Yugoslavia and Australia's Chancellor Bruno Kreisky on his way to meet President Ford of the United States in Salzburg on Sunday (1 June).

President Sadat paid a 24-hour visit to the Yugoslav President on Thursday (29 May) to brief him on the latest situation in the Middle East. President Tito, a supporter of the Arab cause, praised Egypt's current efforts for peace and charged Israel with rejecting "the offered hand" of Egypt for peace.

President Tito was speaking at a lunch in honour of President Sadat at Bruno Ko Kranja. He also declared that only Israeli withdrawal from all Arab territories occupied after the 1967 War and the recognition of Palestinian rights -- including the right of their own state -- could create the necessary conditions for safe and free life of all peoples in the region.

In a joint statement on Friday (30 May), the two leaders urged the resumption of the Geneva conference to be attended by Palestinian and non-aligned countries.

In Vienna, on Friday, President Sadat spoke with Chancellor Kreisky for 90 minutes on bilateral relations and the Middle East. Later, the Egyptian leader said socialists in his country would be willing to sit round a conference table with Israeli socialists.

Mr. Sadat, who became the first Egyptian leader to visit Austria since World War Two, was accompanied by Vice-President Air Marshal Hosni Mubarak, Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi and Finance Minister Ahmed Abu-Ismail.
