    As the Athens torture trial of Greek Army officers and men of the former military regime ended on Monday (8 December) another opened - at the city'naval court.

    Altogether 36 army personal had faced charges involving the torture of civilians during the seven year dictatorship of the military Junta. Thirteen were cleared. The rest jailed for terms ranging from three and half months to seven years.

    The trial had lasted for 54 days and involved 150 witnesses, including former Prime Ministers, Members of Parliament, and high ranking officers who gave evidence of the torture they had suffered at the military police headquarters and army barracks.

    Meanwhile at the naval court, Rear-Admiral, two naval captains, two commanders and other officers and warrant officers were accused of torturing naval officers and civilians during the dictatorship.

    The Prosecution alleged that those tortured were all members of the "Democratic Defence" organisation who were detained on board the Greek navy prison ship "Helle". More than 30 witnesses are to be called.
