    BANKS, OFFICES AND MOST SHOPS CLOSED FOR THE THREE-DAY HOLIDAY RECALLING JULY 14, 1789, WHEN AN ENRAGED MOB BROKE INTO THE BASTILLE PRISON IN SEARCH OF ARMS.

    EARLY TODAY HUGE CROWDS LINED THE CHAMPS ELYSEES UNDER CLOUDY SKIES TO WATCH A SPECTACULAR MILITARY PARADE AND FLYPAST IN WHICH ABOUT 10,000 MEN TOOK PART. NINE TWIN-JET MAGISTERS OF THE FRENCH AIR FORCE AEROBATIC TEAM STREAKED 150 FEET (50 METRES) ABOVE THE CHAMPS ELYSEES TO HERALD THE DISPLAY OF MILITARY POWER.

    PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE, WITH PRIME MINISTER GEORGE POMPIDOU AND ARMED FORCES MINISTERS PIERRE MESSMER, TOOK THE SALUTE AS AIRCRAFT AND HELICOPTERS SWOOPED LOW OVER THE BROAD AVENUE.

    THE PARIS POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS HELD SEPARATE CELEBRATIONS AT THEIR HEADQUARTERS.

    GIANT FIREWORK DISPLAYS WERE SCHEDULED AS WELL AS CHARITY FANCY-DRESS BALLS AND PARTIES. MOTORING ORGANISATIONS PREPARED FOR MASSIVE TRAFFIC JAMS AS THOUSANDS OF MOTORISTS HEADED FOR THE COUNTRY OR THE COAST.
