  • Description

Arab solidarity against Israel was the major topic of talks between the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al-Thani, and Syrian President Hafez Assad in Damascus on Saturday (6 July).

President Assad had welcomed Sheikh Khalifa as he arrived in Damascus that morning for a two-day visit.

Sheikh Khalifa set the tons of his talks with President Assad when he told newsmen that it was important "to devote all Arab resources and potential to the liberation of occupied Arab territories and to the restoration of the Arab rights."
Before the talks started, Sheikh Khalifa visited the famous Omayyades Mosque and the Folk Art Museum in Damascus.

The following day, the Gulf state leader was to visit the garrison town of Kuneitra in the Golan Heights -- handed back to Syria by Israel under the disengagement agreement -- before holding another round of talks with President Assad.

Among the other topics discussed at the talks were "the recovery of the rights of the Palestinian people, and the strengthening of the fraternal relations between Syria and Qatar."
Sheikh Khalifa was to leave Syria on Monday (8 July) for a three-day visit to Jordan, before going on to Cairo for talks with President Sadat.
