  • Description

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, WHO SUFFERED A STROKE MORE THAN A WEEK AGO, "TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORSE" TONIGHT (FRIDAY), HIS DOCTOR, LORD MORAN REPORTED. THIS MORNING AFTER HIS VISIT, LORD MORAN SAID THAT THERE WAS NO CHANGE IN THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER'S CONDITION, BUT AFTER A SECOND VISIT THIS EVENING HE SAID THERE HAD BEEN DETERIORATION IN SIR WINSTON'S CONDITION.

NEWSMEN FROM MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD ARE KEEPING A VIGIL NEAR SIR WINSTON'S RESIDENCE. FOLLOWING A REQUEST EARLIER THIS WEEK BY LADY CHURCHILL, THEY HAVE MOVED AWAY FROM THE FRONT DOOR OF SIR WINSTON'S HOME, BUT THEY REMAIN WITHIN SIGHT OF IT READY TO REPORT ANY NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN HIS CONDITION. THE MEN REPRESENT NEWSPAPERS AND TELEVISION ORGANISATIONS FROM MANY COUNTRIES. MANY OF THEM ARE EUROPE, BUT OTHERS COME FROM THE UNITED STATES AND SOUTH AMERICA.

THE SMALL CROWD OF JOURNALISTS, CAMERAMEN AND SPECTATORS NEAR SIR WINSTON'S HOME HAD THEIR ATTENTION DIVERTED THIS MORNING WHEN A SMALL FIRE BROKE OUT IN A NEARBY BUILDING. IT WAS QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED BY FIREMEN. THE FIRE ENGINES DID NOT USE ALARM BELLS FOR FEAR OF DISTURBING SIR WINSTON.

LORD MORAN WILL PUBLISH ANOTHER BULLETIN ON SIR WINSTON'S CONDITION TOMORROW (SATURDAY).
