  • Description

The Security Council of the United Nations has voted to extended its peacekeeping force in the Sinai for another three months after a rowdy meeting marked by clashes between the Soviet and Chinese delegates.

Previous extensions had been six months t a time, but Egypt would now accept only a further three-month term following the failure of United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's "step-by-step" negotiations last month.

China and Iraq abstained from voting and the other 13 members of the Council voted for the extension.

The resolution expressed the Council's concern about the prevailing tension in the area. It also called for the parties concerned to implement immediately the Council's resolution adopted after the war in October, 1973, which proposed a negotiated settlement.

UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim Was asked to submit at the end of the new three-month period a report on developments in the situation and measures taken to implement the Council's call for a settlement.
