  • Description

The US Navy's newest attack bomber - Grumman A2F-1 Intruder - was handed over at the manufacturer's Galveston, New York, plant recently, it is the navy's first low level bomber to posses ability to deliver, accurately and automatically, both nuclear and conventional weapons on targets completely obscured by weather or darkness.

Apart from the two viewing screens that enable the pilot to "see" targets and geographical features whatever the conditions the A2F-1 carries "DIANE" - Digital Integrated Attack Navigation Equipment. When set "DIANE" guides the aircraft to its target and releases the weapon at the precise moment.

To aid take-off Intruder has tilting tailpipes which direct the jet blast downwards to give additional lift.
