  • Description

INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH OF A BOAC BOEING 707 INTO THE SLOPES OF MOUNT FUJI ON SATURDAY IS CONTINUING. THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.

TWELVE MINUTES AFTER TAKE-OFF FROM TOKYO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON SATURDAY, THE AIRLINER SPIRALLED OUT OF THE CLEAR AFTERNOON SKY AND CRASHED INTO THE MOUNTAINSIDE, KILLING THE 124 PASSENGERS AND CREW ON BOARD.

A TEAM OF 17 BOAC INVESTIGATORS, HEADED BY SIR GILES GUTHRIE, THE BOAC CHAIRMAN, FLEW INTO TOKYO LAST NIGHT AND THIS MORNING LEFT FOR THE CRASH TO COLLECT EYE-WITNESS REPORTS. MEDICAL EXAMINATION OF THE VICTIM'S BODIES HAS SHOWN THAT WITHOUT EXCEPTION THEY ALL SUSTAINED FRACTURES INDICATING THAT ALL DEATHS WERE CAUSED BY THE TREMENDOUS IMPACT OF THE CRASH.

THE TWO BUDDHIST TEMPLES IN GOTEMBA, WHERE THE BODIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN, SAID TODAY THAT SO FAR 64 HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED AFTER A DIFFICULT AND GRUELLING EXAMINATION OF THE MUTILATED CORPSES.

YESTERDAY, ANOTHER BOAC BOEING 707 WAS HELD BACK AT TOKYO AIRPORT WHEN OIL WAS SEEN TO BE LEAKING FROM THE AIRCRAFT'S FUEL TANKS. PASSENGERS WERE TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER FLIGHT.
