  • Description

The German freighter "Brandenburg" sank in the English Channel today (Tuesday) apparently after hitting the wreck of the oil tanker "Texaco Caribbean" which went to the bottom less than 24 hours earlier. Eight men died in the first wreck and 21 in the second.

The 2,700-ton "Brandenburg" sank within two minutes of striking the underwater object about seven miles off the English coast. Dozens of ships, including a hovercraft, were diverted to the area and picked up a few survivors.

The exact position of the wreck of the front section of the "Texaco Caribbean" was unknown before the second tragedy. Both ships went down in one of the most crowded sea lanes in the world. The number of collisions there has been increasing in recent years and nautical experts are now stepping up their campaign for alteration of the international regulations which govern navigation in the English Channel.
