Background: Co-operation and mutual help were the themes of a communique issued in Fort Lamy on Monday (11 December), at the end of a five-day visit to Chad by Nigerian Head of State General Yakubu Gowon.

At a banquet the previous evening, the Nigerian leader referred to ancient links between the two countries, and commented:
SYNOPSIS: The people of Chad gave a rapturous reception to General Yakubu Gowon, the Nigerian leader, throughout his five-day visit.

The General and President Francois Tombalbaye of Chad relaxed at a banquet after a hectic programme of talks and travel.

General Gowon made a speech in which he referred to the ancient links between Nigeria and Chad.

President Tombalbaye said the two nations were on the way to great progress together for the good of their peoples and the whole of Africa.

The two countries have been especially close following Chad's strong support for Nigeria during the Biafran hostilities.

At the Foreign Affairs Ministry the following day the two leaders mat again to sign a joint communique on the outcome of General Gowon's visit. The announcement reaffirmed both men's faith in the Organisation of African Unity. They were also pleased with the cordial relations between their states. During the visit they had already initialled agreements on extradition, cultural relations and co-operation and mutual assistance.

President Tombalbaye has accepted an invitation to visit Nigeria soon. Meanwhile each country will be investigating further possibilities for closer co-operation.
