  • Description

The Lebanese Cabinet has been holding a series of emergency meetings this week (8 September) in an attempt to halt the factional violence which has been raging around the northern city of Tripoli.

More than one hundred people have died in the fighting between Moslem and Christian factions.

The six man Lebanese Cabinet is reported to be divided over whether to send in the army to restor order.

The Interior Minister, Camille Chamoun, is said to be in favour of using Lebanon's 14,000 strong army to control the situation but Premier Rashid Karami, is reported to have grave fears that the Christian-dominated army will only exacerbate the violence, leading to an all out civil war.
