Background: ENGLAND, LONDON, OLD BAILEY COURT

A British subject working for the Secret Service, M15, was jailed for 23 years for spraying on 16/4. M15 officer, Michael Bettany, was declared guilty by a jury, which deliberated for five hours before reaching a unanimous verdict. The proceedings, lasting four days, were carried out in closed session. Lord Chief Justice, Lord Laing, sentencing the defendant, said he was guilty under Britains's official Secrets Act, of having passed information to the Soviet Union, which could have almost certainly led to the death of more than one person. He also told Bettany he was puerile and dangerous. After the verdict was known, a friend of the defendant, David Duckworth, said he was shocked and upset at the rigour of the sentence, and described Bettany as a quiet and very nice person. Bettany's solicitor Sarah Burton, in a communique she later read on behalf of her client, denounced the British judiciary. In the communique, Bettany had written that the sentence showed how much a supposedly independent judiciary was willing to act as an arm of the nation's executive. It also said that, in their struggle for peace, many were prepared to give up their liberty, and even their lives for a victory which, historically, was inevitable. As a last political gesture, Bettany said he was appealing to all, to ensure that truth ultimately prevailed.
