  • Description

    IN SAO PAOLO, WHERE THE BRITISH INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION OPENS ON WEDNESDAY (5 MARCH), 350 EXHIBITORS ARE PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES TO HIS MILLION POUND (2.4 MILLION DOLLARS) SHOP WINDOW FOR BRITISH TRADE IN SOUTH AMERICA.

    MORE THAN 1 1/4 MILLION POUNDS (3 MILLION DOLLARS) WORTH OF INDUSTRIAL GOODS ARE ON SHOW IN THE EXHIBITION, WHICH CONTINUES UNTIL MARCH 16. IT IS THE MOST AMBITIOUS ATTEMPT THE UNITED KINGDOM HAS MADE TO ENTER THE BRAZILIAN MARKET, AND THE FIRST MAJOR BRITISH TRADE FAIR TO BE HELD IN SOUTH AMERICA SINCE 1931.

    DURING THE EXHIBITION THE SPONSORS, THE BRITISH NATIONAL EXPORT COUNCIL, ARE ARRANGING A SERIES OF INFORMAL MEETINGS BETWEEN BRITISH MANUFACTURERS AND NEARLY 150 LEADING BRAZILIAN INDUSTRIALISTS. THE EXHIBITION'S PATRON, PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH, SAID IN SAO PAOLO IN NOVEMBER 1968, DURING HIS STATE VISIT TO BRAZIL WITH THE QUEEN: "I HOPE IT WILL INTRODUCE MANY BRITISH COMPANIES TO THE IMMENSE POTENTIAL OF BRAZIL, AND I HOPE IT WILL DEMONSTRATE TO MANY BRAZILIANS THE RANGE AND CAPACITY OF MODERN BRITISH INDUSTRY."
    ON FILM ARE SEVERAL OF THE EXHIBITORS;
    IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES HAVE BEEN EXPORTING TO BRAZIL FOR 50 YEARS. HAWKER SIDDELEY AND BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION REPRESENT THE AIRCRAFT INDUSTRY, WHICH HAS RECENTLY OBTAINED LARGE ORDERS FROM BRAZILIAN LOCAL AIRLINES.

    GEC (GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY) WITH AEI (ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES) AND ENGLISH ELECTRIC ARE EXHIBITING ADVANCED ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.

    MATHER AND PLATT EXHIBIT PUMPS, ELECTRIC MOTORS, FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLERS AND TEXTILE PRINTING MACHINERY, WHILE CONSOLIDATED PNEUMATIC SHOW THEIR RANGE OF PNEUMATIC TOOLS.

    THE UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY IS ONE OF TWO STATE CORPORATIONS EXHIBITING, (THE OTHER IS THE BRITISH STEEL CORPORATION). BRITISH BANKS, WHICH HAVE FINANCED LARGE PROJECTS IN BRAZIL IN RECENT YEARS, ARE ALSO REPRESENTED.

    BRITAIN IS BRAZIL'S THIRD-LARGEST SUPPLIER OF MANUFACTURED GOODS, AND HER EXPORTS TO BRAZIL LAST YEAR ROSE IN VALUE BY NEARLY 125 PER CENT, FROM 19.9 MILLION POUNDS (47.7 MILLION DOLLARS) IN 1967 TO 44.7 MILLION POUNDS (107.3 MILLION DOLLARS) IN 1968.
