SYNOPSIS: All the central shopping streets of Rome have been closed to traffic for the first time this year, giving Christmas shopper more freedom and less danger from the traffic which plagues these narrow streets. Entertaining the shoppers as usual were these musicians from the Arbruzzi mountains, playing traditional bagpipe music.

Rome was managing to put on a gay face for Christmas, despite the country's continuing economic depression -- a million unemployed, and chronic industrial strife.

The focal point of the city's decorations this year is the fashionable Via Borgognona, which has been lined with palm trees and laid out with a green carpet down its centre. And at Piazza Navona, the annual Christmas Fair has been open with its stalls of sweets, Christmas gifts, and numerous Father Christmases.
