    A GROUP OF FIFTEEN STUDENTS FROM GUINEA WHO WERE DETAINED BY GHANAIAN OFFICIALS IN ACCRA FOR MORE THAN A WEEK ENTERED LAGOS UNIVERSITY ON WEDNESDAY.

    THE STUDENTS WERE RELEASED ON MONDAY AFTER INTERVENTION BY THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY IN A DISPUTE BETWEEN GHANA AND GUINEA.

    THE STUDENTS WERE AMONG NINETEEN GUINEANS DETAINED BY GHANA IN RETALIATION AGAINST THE ALLEGED DETENTION OF GHANAIANS OFFICIALS IN CONAKRY, THE GUINEA CAPITAL.

    THE LEADER OF THE STUDENTS SAID ON ARRIVAL IN LAGOS THAT THE DETAINEES HAD BEEN BEATEN AND TORTURED BY GHANAIAN AUTHORITIES, AND ALLEGED THAT POLICE IN ACCRA HAD FAILED TO RETURN TO THEM VALUABLES HELD WHEN THEY WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

    THE GUINEAN STUDENTS ARE TO STUDY ENGLISH IN NIGERIA UNDER A CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME BETWEEN GUINEA AND NIGERIA.

    THE GUINEAN CHARGE D'AFFAIRES IN NIGERIA, MR. ALY BANGOURA, WAS TO HAVE FLOWN TO GUINEA THIS WEEK TO REPORT THE ARRIVAL OF THE STUDENT GROUP IN NIGERIA AND TO REPORT ON THE ALLEGATIONS OF MISTREATMENT DURING THEIR DETENTION IN ACCRA.
