Background: INTRODUCTION The director general of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Mr. Ahmad Mukhtar Ambo arrived in Damascus on Friday (4 February) to begin a five-day official visit to Syria.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Ambo was accompanied by UNESCO's vice-director of science, Dr. Abdul Razzak Kaddour, and the director of the Arab States Relations department. On his arrival, Mr. Ambo said he was sorry that he had not been able to visit Syria before. "I have long been looking forward to this visit," he said.
Mr. Ambo later had talks with several representatives of the Syria Government. Syria's Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Mohamad Ali Hashem sat in on the discussions. The Syrian under-secretaries for information, culture, education, members of the staff of Damascus University and the ambassadors of Senegal and Mauritania were also present during the preliminary talks. Mr. Ambo told them the purpose of his visit was to study international cooperation in the fields of education, culture and science.
