    IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY) A SMALL PAINTING BY THE DUTCH ARTIST, VINCENT VAN GOGH, WAS AUCTIONED FOR GBP40,000 STERLING AT SOTHEBY'S - THE FAMOUS FIRM OF ART AUCTIONEERS. THE PAINTING, PIETA (AFTER DELACROIX), WAS BOUGHT BY THE SWISS ART DEALER, BEYELER OF ZURICH. A PAINTING OF A MOTHER AND CHILD BY MARY CASSATT SOLD FOR GBP14,000 AND ONE BY PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR SOLD FOR GBP24,000.

    THE VAN GOGH WAS ONE THAT HE PAINTED WHILE AN INMATE AT THE ASYLUM AT SAINT-REMY IN PROVINCE. IT WAS SENT TO SOTHEBY'S FOR SALE BY THE FAMILY OF THE LATE M. GUSTAVE FAYET OF IGNY, SEINE ET OISE, FRANCE. THE PICTURE MEASURES 16 INCHES (41 CMS) BY 13 INCHES (33 CMS).

    MARY CASSATT, WHOSE PAINTING OF A MOTHER AND CHILD WAS SOLD FOR GBP14,000, IS USUALLY CONSIDERED AS AMERICA'S GREATEST WOMAN ARTIST. SHE LIVED IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE LAST CENTURY.

    RENOIR'S "PAYSAGE AVEC PERSONNAGES" - WHICH SOLD FOR GBP24,000 - WAS PAINTED ABOUT 1895. IT BEARS THE SIGNATURE OF THE ARTIST.
