Background: Mrs. Imelda Marcos, wife of the Philippines President, on Friday (14 February) formally dedicated the new Philippine Heart Centre both to her own country and all of Asia as a "gift of love."
At the same time, President Ferdinand Marcos, who also attended the inauguration ceremony, announced a 10-year tax exemption for the centre -- located in nearby Quezon City -- and to all doctors, whether Filipino or foreign, who make use of its facilities.
Some 20 heart specialists from the United States, South Africa, Iran, Italy and several Asian countries attended the dedication of the new heart centre, which is made up of two connecting buildings -- an eight-storey medical arts building and a four-storey hospital with a 128-bed capacity. The centre was begun and finished in 10 months' under the personal direction of Mrs. Marcos.
To commemorate the occasion, a crowd of nearly 100,000 persons watched a mammoth parade depicting the history of medicine in the Philippines.
