  • Description

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on Tuesday called on nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to build up close relations with their new communist neighbours in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Mr. Lee was speaking at the opening of a four-day meeting of foreign ministers of ASEAN which groups Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.

Mr. Lee told the foreign ministers that the ASEAN countries should emphasise in their relations with the Indochina communist nations "like the Japanese, we have to live with a continuous land-mass which is communist, all the way from Siberia, China, down to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia."
Mr. Lee also called on ASEAN members to establish close economic ties with Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. Lee and the other ASEAN heads of governments will meet the Prime Ministers of Japan, Australia and New Zealand after the ASEAN Summit conference in Kuala Lumpur next month.
