  • Description

After court proceedings in London and Scotland forbidding them to marry Tessa Kennedy and Dominic Elwes eloped to Cuba where they were married in January of this year. Now they have returned to England to face the music, and not very cheerful music either, for Dominic is liable to be committed to prison for taking Tessa out of the country.

They landed at Southampton from the liner SSLiberte. Elwes left the ship by a tender and Tessa went ashore with her father and father-in-law, the portrait painter, Simon Elwes, on a specially hired lunch.

It was on Nov. 28th, last year, that Tessa was made a ward of the Chancery Court and Dominic told that he could not marry her, after her parents withheld their consent. Immediately the couple made for Scotland, hoping to get married there. More court proceedings forbade them, so they flew to Cuba and went through a form of marriage in Havana. Meanwhile the Chancery Court in London made an order committing Dominic to prison for a deliberate breach of the court's original order.

In March Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Elwes travelled on to New York and re-married, hoping that the more times they were married the more legal it would be. Britain now waits to see whether Dominic will go to gaol.
